Osing Bride (Banyuwangi, East Java)

Indonesia is home to ten percent of the world’s species of flowering plants—an estimated 25,000 species—with 55% being endemic. For many of Indonesia’s tribes and ethnic groups, these flowers signify a special meaning, and feature prominently in their traditional ceremonies.

The mupus braen blambangan that adorns an Osing bride in Banyuwangi, East Java, for instance, is a stunning flower arrangement, each meticulously placed to form a regal bridal head ornament rich in symbolism.

The five clusters of roses across the mupus braen blambangan reflect the five Islamic prayers, and are a reminder of the bride’s faith. Holiness and purity are represented by the white jasmine, set in a flowing string as a prayer for a well-lived marriage that flows freely like water. This prayer is echoed by the cantilevers placed amongst the other flowers, symbolizing the hope for a harmonious life for the couple.
