This artisan chess set features the Dayak Ngaju bride of Central Kalimantan, Indonesia, on the lid. When opened, it reveals chess pieces that are inspired by the tribe’s wooden shields, as well as their traditional mask, dress and house. The intricate artwork that adorns this chess set is meticulously silk-screen printed, watercolored, and finished in high-gloss lacquer by Indonesian artisans—all by hand.
This craftmanship results in minor differences that make each chess set in the limited production run of 25 a unique creation.
